About Us

Tom Trafton, Harford Yoga Guide

Tom’s interest in yoga began in 1998 when he took yoga classes at various studios in the central Maryland area. Upon retiring from his 34 year teaching career, Tom became a certified yoga instructor completing his teacher training at The Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in western Massachusetts. He started teaching yoga in Harford County in 2010. His Yoga classes are relaxing and enjoyable, thought provoking and introspective, meditative and invigorating. In performing asana, students are encouraged to find the balance between ease and effort, while exploring their edge utilizing pranayama.

A natural teacher with a Bachelor’s degree in Geography and Environmental Planning and a Master’s degree in Education, Tom has played, coached and refereed soccer at the high school, collegiate and professional level. His High School Envirothon teams won numerous county and state competitions, and ranked second and fourth in the nation in consecutive years. He has led educational trips throughout Harford County, Maryland, and Costa Rica. Tom’s commitment to fostering environmental awareness in family, friends and students has been the impetus behind his hiking and exploring through Costa Rica, North America, India, Alaska, Ireland and England. During his travels, he has recorded over 600 life birds. His retreats combine his interest in the environment, natural history and yoga. These experiences enable Tom to naturally connect with students of all ages and abilities.

His yoga practice combines pranayama and asana flow to achieve a dynamic blend of muscle stretching and strengthening. It is through this inquiry that he guides his students to develop awareness of mind, body and breath for stress relief and relaxation. Tom invites you to share in his practice and awaken the flow of prana to promote physical and mental well-being.

Testimonials

  • “I just want to thank you for creating such a wonderful weekend. It was obvious how much work you put into it and I am so grateful that you offered it and happy that I went. It was so nice to escape and just be peaceful and relaxed. I loved the air, fire, water, and earth classes with the emphasis on different types of breathing. Everything was perfect except the weather, but that's out of our control and at least it didn't affect the yoga! The dinners were great - wonderful choices! Thanks again for a wonderful weekend!” - Joan
  • “Tom is a terrific teacher. He is one of those truly gifted teachers who could teach anything well. His passion for both yoga and teaching serve his students very well. His focus is very much on making this your own personal journey. I have tried other classes in the area but feel like I get the most out of Tom’s. I think you would really enjoy it… Yoga blocks and straps are provided, you just need your mat-and a few of those are stashed in the cabinet for anyone who may forget or possible visitors. He also has some knee pads for those who have trouble with the knees.” - Terese Domenech
  • “I just wanted to say I thoroughly enjoyed the class last night at 6:30 pm. I am so glad to have found you both and am looking forward to the Yoga weeks ahead! I felt very relaxed, open, and joyful as I left the building. Great way to end my evening.” - Liz Scala
  • “Last night’s class was very helpful for me. During our week off, I had a small procedure and wasn’t able to do as much as in past classes so I did modify some positions. I actually used your relaxation technique at the end of the class during my procedure ( I heard you in my head saying to relax each body part….) and it worked wonderfully. But your class has been very helpful to me in general; come to find out, the breathing technique you have taught us (the one you started with last night) is one that is used to help the flow of lymph fluid, which is helpful to me since I had lymph nodes removed in the past, and the stretching has helped increase the range of motion in my arm. Not to mention the relaxation techniques. Needless to say, I am happy I found your class.” – Diane Pfeifer
  • “I wish I could set aside the hour and a half every single day. It makes me and especially my back feel wonderful. I was just told today by a doctor that Yoga is the absolute best “cure” for women with any form of osteoporosis. Better than any kind of supplement like calcium. I love it!” - Anonymous
  • “I just wanted to tell you that, finally, after a couple of years of yoga, the “mental” part has clicked for me. I am a very anxious person and have always struggled to clear my head and focus on my body and breathing. I’ve always enjoyed yoga, but it is different now. I love it!! Thank you!!” – Katie Eubank
  • “I really enjoyed the last session of yoga and am looking forward to the new Spring session. I plan to attend Tuesday nights, same as last session. I wanted to thank you for incorporating more challenging poses and bringing focus to high- stress areas like the shoulders and hips. I always leave so relaxed and thankfully, it has carried into my everyday routine and lifestyle. Thank you again for bringing yoga to Fallston!” – Monica Chambers
